The next day was calm, a breather in the middle of their travel whirlwind. The plan was simple: stay in during the day, and let the magic of Kyoto's night sky guide their footsteps later. After all, no one wore moonlight as gracefully as this ancient city.

The house was filled with soft chatter. The elders sat together in a nostalgic circle, reliving forgotten tales. The couples? Lost in their own worlds, fingers brushing, smiles exchanged quietly.

Meanwhile, in one cozy corner of the living room, Shashi and Saksham were cracking up-quite literally. They were curled over Saksham's phone, shaking with laughter.

"Bhalli!" Shashi gasped between giggles, slapping his arm. (You idiot!)

"Yeh accha tha na?" Saksham grinned proudly. (That was good, right?)

"Bro, mast tha!" she laughed harder, holding her stomach. (Bro, it was awesome!)

Laksha turned around, raising a suspicious brow. "Tum dono kis baaraat pe has rahe ho?" (What are you two laughing at like it's some wedding procession?)

"Hum dono Saksham ki chats padh rahe hai." Shashi wiped tears from her eyes. (We're reading Saksham's chats.)

"To usme horse kyu ban rahe ho?" Laksha frowned. (Then why are you laughing like hyenas?)

"Mere khaayal se couples ki yeh baatein bohot funny lagti hai. Aap bhi padho, I swear aap bhi hasoge." Shashi held out the phone. (I think couples' chats are hilarious. You should read too-you'll laugh.)

They were scrolling through Saksham's old chats with his ex. Cringe-worthy, dramatic, and pathetically adorable-everything young love should be.

"Bro, tune sahi decision liya hai." Shashi teased, shaking her head. (Bro, you made the right decision.)

"Matlab, maine tujhe kabhi itna bewakoof nahi dekha. Tu pyar mein pagal tha, aur woh itni zyada." (I've never seen you this stupid. You were mad in love-and she even madder.)

Saksham burst out laughing, flopping backward onto the couch.

As the evening melted into twilight, excitement buzzed through the house. The Kyoto International Manga Museum awaited them-a paradise for any manga lover. Laksha and Agastya were practically vibrating with anticipation.

The car ride through Kyoto was poetic-quiet streets, the golden glow of lanterns, and the soft wind whispering through open windows. Sakura petals fluttered past, like shy dancers.

After about an hour, they reached the museum. Agastya's eyes lit up like a child discovering a secret garden.

"Mujhe yahin chhod do, mujhe mera swarg mil gaya." (Leave me here-I've found my heaven.)

Everyone chuckled at his drama.

---

The museum visit felt like a dream. For those who adored stories etched in black-and-white panels, it was bliss.

Later, they were piled into a van, headed toward a restaurant. Shashi groaned dramatically.

"Okay, I don't know about the rest of you-but I'm freaking starving."

As soon as they stepped into the cozy Indian restaurant tucked into a Kyoto alley, her expression relaxed. Gone were her scrunched brows and dramatic sighs-this was her happy place.

With the first bite, Shashi closed her eyes. A soft sigh escaped her lips. "Jannat." (Heaven.)

She smiled like a child. "Kya khana hai yeh... Kolkata chow mein-mera favorite since childhood. Is meal ka toh jawab hi nahi." (What food... Kolkata chow mein-my favorite since childhood. This meal is unbeatable.)

"I know I'm in Japan and should be trying Japanese cuisine," she added, grinning sheepishly, "but I can't live without Indian food."

She wriggled in her seat happily, prompting everyone to laugh.

"Why are you dancing?" asked Chhote Papa.

"Because she's eating her favorite thing and she's happy," Saksham explained, shaking his head with a smile.

"This idiot knows me too well," Shashi muttered, chuckling.

---

The cold wind brushed against my cheeks like a whispered lullaby, and I pulled my shawl closer around me. Kyoto at night didn't just shine-it glowed. The narrow streets wound like ribbons of amber beneath the soft glow of lanterns, casting golden halos over cobbled paths. The silence wasn't empty-it was gentle, soulful, as if the city itself was breathing slowly, calmly.

Paper lanterns danced in the breeze, swaying above closed shopfronts, their soft light painting poetry on the wooden doors. The sakura trees lining the road had begun to shed their last blooms of spring, petals drifting down like sleepy confessions, gathering quietly near my feet.

I walked barefoot, the smooth stone beneath my skin oddly comforting. My sandals dangled from my hand as if I no longer needed them to feel grounded. I reached into my pocket, tugged out my earphones, and let the music flood in-soft, nostalgic, the kind that hums directly to your soul.

I tilted my head to the sky. The moon was silver tonight, not just a circle of light, but a companion-watching me, following me, kissing my face with its silent glow. It was so still, this moment. Still enough to feel the peace I always ran from.

I imagined someone beside me. Not someone real, not yet-but someone mine. Someone whose hand would fit into mine perfectly, like a final puzzle piece. I smiled at the thought. A soft, stupid, dreamy smile.

My family walked a little behind, chatting, laughing, letting me wander ahead like I always did. Maybe they knew I needed this. Space. Solitude. The feeling of discovering something I couldn't quite name.

My fingers brushed against my scarf as I sang softly along with the music, "Chaandni raat hai, khamoshi saath hai..." (It's a moonlit night, with silence as my companion.)

Kasam hai tumhe tum

Agar mujhase ruthe

Kasam hai tumhe tum

Agar mujhase ruthe

Rahe saans jab tak

Ye bandhan na toote

Tumhen dil diya hai

Ye vaada kiya hai sanam main

Tumhaari rahungi sada

Ye raaten ye mausam nadi ka

Kinaara ye chanchal hawa

Kaha do dilon ne ki mil kar

Kabhi ham nahonge juda

Ye raaten ye mausam nadi

Ka kinaara ye chanchal hawa

The air smelt of sweet soy, rain-drenched stone, and distant incense. Somewhere, wind chimes sang their high-pitched lullaby, and bamboo leaves rustled like pages being turned in an ancient book.

This moment-this night-was perfect.

And just when I thought nothing could disturb it...

A hand.

Rough.

Uninvited.

Sudden.

Over my mouth.

Another over my eyes.

Everything went black.

And the peace I had found just seconds ago-

shattered.
