-----------------
The room was bathed in the soft glow of moonlight spilling through the sheer curtains, casting silver shadows across the wooden floor. The air was still, wrapped in the hush of midnight. Shashi lay curled beneath the pale ivory sheets, her breath slow and even, a delicate hand resting against her cheek-utterly at peace, lost in dreams.
But the stillness was gently broken by the quiet rustle of movement. Aakash stood near the dresser, his tall frame cloaked in darkness, lit only by the faint shimmer of the moon. His brows were furrowed, eyes scanning every corner with silent urgency. He moved with careful precision, as if afraid even the sound of his breath might wake her. Drawers opened and closed without a sound, fingers scrolling over papers, books, and trinkets-searching.
Behind him, Shashi stirred slightly, murmuring something unintelligible in her sleep, and he froze. A part of him softened, watching her sleep like that, untouched by the storm swirling inside.
Her eyelashes fluttered, and slowly, she opened her eyes. It took her a minute to realize she was alone in bed. She reached out to his side, but found only emptiness.
She lazily removed the duvet from herself and looked around the room.
"Aakash?" she called, in a slow and sleepy voice.
"...J...ji," he stuttered.
"Kya hua, tum jaag kyun rahe ho?" (What happened, why are you awake?) she asked.
"Voh... kuch dhoond raha hoon," (I'm looking for something...) he said.
"Kya?" (What?) she asked again.
"Medicine. For headache," he replied.
"Tumhare sar mein dard hai?" (You have a headache?) she asked.
"Ha... haan," he replied.
"Idhar aao," (Come here,) she called him and slowly sat up on the bed.
"Sorry, aap meri wajah se jaag gaye," (Sorry, you woke up because of me,) he said with guilt.
"Tum yahan sar rakho," (Rest your head here,) she said, pointing towards her lap.
"N-nahi, main theek hoon... itna bhi dard nahi hai." (N-no, I'm fine... it's not that bad,) he stammered.
"Haan, bilkul dard nahi hai, tumhe shakal se dikh raha sab," (Yeah, totally no pain-it's written all over your face,) she said.
"N-nahi..." he tried to argue.
"Chup chap apna sar rakho meri godh mein," (Just shut up and place your head on my lap,) she said sternly.
"Par..." (But...) he hesitated.
"Aakash... sun toh lo yaar," (Aakash... just listen, please,) she pleaded.
He finally lay his head on her lap and turned sideways on the bed. She gently caressed his hair and massaged his forehead.
The lines on his forehead slowly faded into a relaxed expression. His breath became even, and he didn't realize when sleep claimed him.
Shashi looked at his peaceful face and kept stroking his hair. She didn't realize when she, too, fell asleep.
The whole night passed like that-she was sitting up against the headboard, and he slept in her lap.
The sunrays infiltrated through the curtains, and the golden light fell on Aakash's face. His eyelashes fluttered, and he stirred. He slowly opened his eyes, shut them again, and snuggled into the pillow-but found something softer.

He opened his eyes and realized he had slept there-the entire night.

Aakash's POV:
When I opened my eyes, the first thing I felt wasn't the light filtering through the curtains-it was warmth. Not the kind that comes from the sun, but from something far more tender. My head rested on her lap.
(Mera sar unki godh mein tha.)
I blinked, once... twice, trying to piece together the night. I remembered the throbbing headache that refused to leave me alone, the way every nerve in my skull had pulsed with tension-and then her. My darling.
She had come quietly, without a word, like she always did when I needed her the most.
I didn't even ask. Maybe... she just knew.
I remember her touch-soothing, slow, deliberate. Not out of duty... but something else. Something unspoken.
And I must've drifted off in that comfort, like a child lulled into sleep.
(Poore raat main unki godh mein sota raha. Usne mujhe hilaya tak nahi.)
(I slept in her lap the entire night. She didn't even stir me.)
She sat there, an anchor-still, steady-amidst my storm.
A strange ache gripped my chest. Not painful, but heavy. She was always doing this-caring silently, without expecting anything in return.
But right now, as I lay there with her fingers still tangled in my hair, my heart whispered a truth-
I'm falling for her... a little more every day.
I slowly lifted my head from her lap, careful not to wake her. She was still-peaceful, like she hadn't moved all night. Gently, I picked her up and laid her down on the bed, pulling the blanket over her shoulders.
She looked so calm. So soft.
"Neend chura di meri Raaton ki," (You've stolen my nights of sleep,) I murmured.
I brushed a strand of hair off her face, letting my fingers linger for just a moment.
Then quietly stepped away to freshen up. When I returned, she was still asleep, her face half-buried in the pillow.
"Hope her back and legs don't hurt too much," I thought with a faint smile and walked out, letting her sleep a little longer.

Author's POV:
The grand banquet hall, bathed in the soft glow of chandeliers and the warm chaos of preparation, stood majestic-like an ornate scene plucked from a royal dream. The golden railings, fresh flowers lining the tables, and the clinking of cutlery mixed with the hurried footsteps of the staff.
Tonight, this palace would host a gathering of power, legacy, and whispered secrets.
But for now, the morning was still unfolding. At the massive dining table, the Rajput family sat in their usual regal fashion-some discussing the evening's arrangements, others lost in their cups of chai. The servants moved like clockwork around them, balancing trays and urgency in equal measure.
And then he arrived.
Aakash.
Walking alone, in his usual composed stride. Dressed simply, yet with a presence that commanded silent attention. His eyes scanned the hall.
Shashi wasn't beside him.
Her absence spoke louder than his footsteps. A brief flicker of emotion crossed his face-too quick for most to catch. But his mother noticed. So did Dadi Saa.
"Shashi kahan hai?" (Where's Shashi?) asked Dadi Saa.
"Soh rahi hai," (She's sleeping,) he replied.
"Par woh toh jaldi uth jaati hai roz," (But she wakes up early every day,) said Aparna.
"Ho sakta hai kal raat ko nahi so paayi, isliye ab so rahi hai," (Maybe she couldn't sleep last night, so she's resting now,) he said.
"Kyuu nahi so payi Bhabhi?" (Why couldn't Bhabhi sleep?) asked Agastya.
"Woh uth jaayegi toh usse pooch lena sab kuch, theek hai?" (Ask her yourself when she wakes up, okay?) he said.
Everyone chuckled and resumed their breakfast.
---
In their room:
The morning sun spilled across the room in warm streaks as Aakash stepped inside, holding a breakfast tray.
Shashi was still on the bed, eyes closed, arms tucked under her head.
He smiled faintly, remembering how she'd stayed up all night, cradling his head in her lap until he fell asleep. The headache was gone... but something softer had been left behind.
"Mrs. Rajput," he said softly.
She stirred and opened one eye, a sleepy smile playing on her lips. "You're up early."
"I brought breakfast," he said, placing the tray on the side table.
He frowned. "You're not getting up?"
She shifted slightly, wincing. "I can't feel my legs. They're... kinda numb."
Aakash stiffened. "Wait-what? Why?"
Shashi gave a small laugh, trying to play it off. "Maybe because someone used them as a pillow all night?"
"You had a headache," she reminded him.
Guilt struck him like a punch. He sat beside her instantly. "Why didn't you wake me up? You should've pushed me off."
"You finally looked... peaceful. I didn't want to ruin that."
He gently lifted her legs onto his lap and began rubbing her calves, concern etched deep into his features. "I didn't mean to hurt you."
"You didn't," she said softly, watching him. "I just didn't expect you to sleep so deeply."
He glanced up, hands pausing. "I haven't slept like that in a long time."
There was a beat of silence between them. Warm. Strange. Like something unspoken was starting to form between the lines of their contract.
"Still," she said, trying to sound light, "you owe me a leg massage now."
"Fair trade," he smirked.
His hands moved with more intent now-his thumbs pressing circles into her skin, drawing small gasps from her lips. She shifted, biting back a moan as his touch traveled higher... slow and deliberate.

Outside, in the garden:
The lawn behind the mansion looked like something out of a royal movie-trimmed hedges, stone pathways. Shashi walked barefoot across the grass, her slippers dangling from one hand. Aadarsh and Saksham were already spread out under the gulmohar tree, sipping drinks like they were on vacation.
"Arey wah, the queen is finally out of her chamber," Saksham spotted her.
Shashi gave him a look. "Had a rough night."
"Rough, huh?" Saksham smirked and elbowed Aadarsh.
Shashi slid into a chair, wincing slightly. "Don't even start. My legs are still numb."
Both guys froze for a split second.
"Wait-what?" Aadarsh blinked.
"Numb legs, you say? That sounds... intense," teased Saksham.
She replied, not catching the sudden shift in their tone. "He slept on them the whole night."
Aadarsh choked on his drink. "He?"
She looked up. "Aakash."
The two exchanged a look.
"So just to clarify. When you say he slept on them-" Saksham coughed into his fist.
"I mean his head," Shashi said. "I gave him a head massage. He fell asleep in my lap."
"And you're saying... that's all that happened?" asked Aadarsh.
"What do you mean?" she frowned.
Saksham's voice was innocent-too innocent. "Just asking. Because you know... numb legs, tired expressions, a certain glow-"
"Are you implying something?" she asked.
Aadarsh shrugged, sipping his coffee. "Look-I'm just saying, you're married. Contract or not. And the way you're walking right now-"
"You both need to shut up," she muttered, face heating. "Nothing happened."
"But something could have," Saksham wiggled his brows.
"My brother's full of surprises. Who knows what he's capable of..."
She grabbed a napkin and tossed it at both of them.
"Laude..." (dickheads...)
