Aakash was admiring his wife, who was sleeping peacefully. He was lost in her beauty until he noticed beads of sweat forming on her forehead, her hands trembling, and her lips murmuring incoherently.
Soon, tears began streaming down her face. He immediately walked towards her and gently patted her cheeks.
"Doctor, please wake up,"
he said again and again, pleading with her.
"No..." she whimpered, waking up with tears in her eyes. Aakash rubbed her back as she broke down again.
"Doctor, don't cry. I'm here... please don't cry,"
he comforted her softly. Unexpectedly, she hugged him tightly, and he wrapped his arms around her.
"It was just a dream, baby. You're safe here,"
he whispered, wiping her tears while she looked at him with teary eyes.
"Why didn't my alarm ring?"
She looked at her phone, and her eyes widened at the time.
"Holy shit, I'm late!" she exclaimed.
"Hey, hey, hey, relax. You're not going to the hospital today. You need rest. Look at your wounds-they're still not healed."
"It's not a major thing, Aakash."
"It is... when that hand is yours,"
he said firmly, leaving her speechless. She just stared at him.
"Now go freshen up, it's time for breakfast,"
he said, pulling her out of her thoughts.
Within a few minutes, Shashi emerged from the bathroom looking fresh. She was dressed in a comfortable yet ethnic outfit, just as Aakash had instructed since she was staying home today.

She brushed her hair and tied it up in a bun, securing it with a clutch. Taking her dupatta, she walked out of the closet to find Aakash seated on the couch, his eyes focused on his phone screen. The glow of the screen cast a soft light on his face, making him look irresistible. His fingers danced gracefully over the screen.
The jingle of her jhumkas caught his attention. He looked at her and got lost in her presence, captivated by her fragrance. Getting up from the couch, he said,
"Can I ask you something?"
"Bomme... umm... hmm?" she nodded.
"I got a call from my friends. We had planned to meet, and they said they'd really like it if you could accompany us."
"Us or you?"
"Meri raani, will you accompany me?" (My queen, will you accompany me?)
"I'd like to meet them."
At the breakfast table:
Everyone was already seated when the couple arrived. Aakash pulled a chair for her, and though she pretended not to be surprised, she was. Both of them sat down and settled in. Aakash served her breakfast, and she softly said,
"Thanks."
He just smiled in return.
"Shashi," Dadi Saa called out to her, and she looked up.
"Ji, Dadi Saa?"
"Are you fine, beta?"
"Ji ji, Dadi Saa, I'm absolutely fine."
Everyone nodded and resumed eating, savoring the delicious dishes. After finishing breakfast, they dispersed to their respective work, while Shashi, Aakash, and Dadi Saa remained at home.
All three sat in the spacious living room, settled comfortably on the couches, chatting casually. While the two women were deep in conversation, Aakash lay on the floor with his head resting on his grandmother's lap, her hand gently caressing his hair.
Aakash had his eyes closed, listening silently. Shashi and Dadi Saa were talking in Marathi, and since he didn't understand the language much, he just listened quietly.
"Chiku," Dadi Saa called him.
He hummed in response.
"Beta, neend aa rahi ho kya?" (Are you feeling sleepy, dear?)
"Nahi... aap dono baatein karte raho." (No... you both carry on talking.)
They all chuckled.
"Shashi, tu kithe saal ki hai?" (Shashi, how old are you?) Dadi Saa asked.
"24," she replied, only to witness the most amused expression on Dadi Saa's face.
"Kya hua?" (What happened?) Shashi asked.
"Maine tujhe pehli baar dekha toh laga college mein hai. Phir suna doctor hai, par mujhe nahi pata tha ki tu 24 saal ki hai. Shakal se toh kitni chhoti lagti hai."
(When I first saw you, I thought you were in college. Then I heard you're a doctor, but I didn't know you're 24-you look so young!)
"Woh toh sab bolte hai, Dadi Saa. Mere dost toh kehte hain mera baal vivaah hua hai."
(Everyone says that, Dadi Saa. My friends say it's like a child marriage.)
"Bolenge hi na... kitni patli si hai. Height ka toh kuch nahi kar sakti, kam se kam khana toh thik se khaya kar!"
(Of course they will. You're so skinny. Can't help the height, but at least eat properly!)
"Main aapko kahan se patli lagti hoon, Dadi Saa? Infact moti hoti jaa rahi hoon."
(Where do you think I look skinny, Dadi Saa? In fact, I'm getting fat.)
"Kisne kaha?" Aakash and Dadi Saa said in unison with serious expressions.
"Daat kyun rahe ho aap dono?" she asked, stammering. (Why are you scolding me, both of you?)
"Apna pet dekha hai? Kitna patla hai aur kitni halki ho."
(Have you seen your waist? So slim and light.) Aakash added.
"Aur nahi toh kya," Dadi Saa joined in. (Exactly.)
"Tumne mera pet kab aur kyun dekha?"
(When and why did you look at my waist?)
"Woh... tumne cotton saree pehni thi tab..."
(Um... when you wore that cotton saree...)
Realizing what he said, he shut his eyes in embarrassment.
"hawwwww..." Shashi face palm herself
"Leave that... we were talking about..."
"Kyu chhodo chhodo, ab toh mujhe jana hai," she said, offended.
(Why should we leave it? Now I have to know.)
He turned his face away, trying to hide his flustered state.
"Idhar dekho, udhar kya dekh rahe ho?"
(Look here! What are you looking away for?)
"Sahi toh keh raha hai yeh," Dadi Saa added.
(He's right, you know.)
He quickly hid behind her.
"Dadi Saa!" she whined.
"Dadi Saa, please... aaj bachao na," Aakash said, pulling Dadi Saa close and whispering.
"Yeh uski kamar pe nazar daalne se pehle sochna chahiye tha na,"
(She should've thought about that before drawing attention to her waist,) Dadi Saa whisper-yelled.
"Yaar Dadi Saa..." Aakash whined.
"Kya Dadi Saa?" Shashi exclaimed. (What, Dadi Saa?)
Just then, the moment was interrupted by a phone call. Aakash's phone buzzed, but before he could grab it, Shashi snatched it.
"Dr. Phone dedo." (Give me the phone, doctor.)
She passed it to him. He picked it up, sliding his finger across the green button. After talking for a few moments, he hung up and looked at Shashi.
"We have to go-it was Harsh."
After informing Dadi Saa that they were going to meet friends, the couple headed to their room to get ready.
In their room:
Aakash tossed the phone on the bed as Shashi walked toward the closet. After a few minutes, she called out,
"Aakaasshhh..."
Hayye ab aap itne pyaar se mera naam logi toh main saans kaise lunga, yaar...
(If you call my name so sweetly, how am I supposed to breathe, darling?)
he smiled to himself and got up, heading toward the closet.
"kahiye, Mr. Aakash," she said softly, looking for something among her clothes.
"Please help me find an outfit."
"Tell me what to do?"
"Choose between Western or Indian?"
"Western would be more comfortable-we're just meeting friends."
"Thik hai, but please don't ask me to wear skirts, dresses, or anything too girly. I mostly avoid such clothes. So pick something from this section," she pointed to her wardrobe.
"Hmm... so comfort is the key? Here you go-wear this," he said, handing her an outfit.
"Nice choice, Mr. Rajput. Just what I wanted. Thank you."
"My pleasure, Mrs. Rajput."
